Maker Faire Orlando 9/13-14 2014

I had a booth at Maker Faire Orlando and it was a real great experience. I have experienced Maker Faire as an observer and now for the first time as a participant having a booth. The Orlando Maker Faire started the year as a mini-Maker Faire but by its launch was graduated to a full Maker Faire and it was anything but mini. With 200+ maker exhibits, 7600+ attendees all well-organized with 225+ volunteers and running for 2 days. All this located in the Orlando Science Museum so you got to see many of its displays and some booths were located next to dinosaurs. The faire had all kinds of makers from steam punk, to high end technology (like Hackaday’s top runner for THP contest http://hac... »

As part of DIY Climate Control you must be able to control the temperature in each zone (room) therefore there must be a way to measure the temperature in each zone. Read this post to understanding zoning and its importance. When I first explored putting in temperature gages throughout the house I looked at running wires throughout the house connected to temperature sensors. But I realized this was both expensive and hard to run wires in an existing house. In doing more research I came across the XBee module. It was perfect for this need, it runs on a mesh network which allows it to wirelessly talk to other XBee modules and digitally communicate data. Plus you can hook up temperature ICs lik... »

My Vision for DIY Climate Control

I have dreamed about having climate controlled house where you can control the various rooms individually. My first thoughts were in the days where you had to run wires to each room to know the temperature and to control the individual vents. That was always too expensive and very difficult to run the wires in an existing home. New Technologies Now there are new technologies, XBees that can run on batteries and send temperature data wirelessly. Arduinos that can make the intelligent decisions and recently Spark Core that allows your Arduino to connect to the cloud through its built in Wi-Fi. Now because of the advancement of technologies it is possible to build it yourself with no wires. DIY... »
